Using different questions

Different kinds of questions can be asked to elicit information from students.

Yes/no questions

Yes/no questions are appropriate at beginning level. Less bright students can also be involved.

• Did Mr. dada go to by pokhara by plane?

Choice questions

• Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Wh questions

• How was the movie Spiderman?

Inferential questions

• What do you think could be the reason some people have recurring dream?

b. Eliciting from pictures

Pictures from either textbooks or other sources like newspaper or magazine can be used in the classroom to elicit new vocabulary. This activity focuses on what questions to ask to elicit language from a pictures. For instance, a teacher takes a picture about farming in Terai region and asks the following questions.

• What are they going on?

• What are they going to do?

c. Acting out(Mimes)

Different moods like angry, happy, and sad and moments of body like walking can be acted out and can be elicited from the students.

d. Prompts

Prompts are not questions but they do get students taking. Prompts can best be used after a text has been well exploited. Prompts

Can be made into a proper questions from by prefixing them with could you……….?, or who will…………? For instance,

• Tell me about……….

• Summarize the poem in yours own words.

e. Giving definitions or explanations or examples

Definitions or explanations of abstract concepts can be used to elicit. For instance, offering definitions, the world democracy or bravery etc. can be elicited.

f. Using concrete objects

Concrete objects like pen, hanky scissors etc. can be used in the class to elicit words.

Education

EDUCATION

Avoiding Faux pas

The patient has no past history of suicides, “wrote a doctor in a patient’s record file after examining her. The patient had had an accident but the family members suspected that she may have tried to commit suicide, both are serious issues in the life of the people concerned, but for me as a reader, I see a problem in the doctor’s writing. No living person can have a past history of suicides. This is certainly an error I writing.

When we write, we need to make sure our words do not send wrong messages however, many a time, we write something which makes us lose our face. One reason for us to write that way is that we write in a hurry and do not check our writing after we finish it. This habit creates problems in many aspects: grammar, spelling and more seriously in meanings. Another reason that we perhaps have a wrong notion about the usage of the words. We use words not in the way they are normally understood. We think we know the words but use them to mean other that we actually mean. It results in a faux pas such as in this web page. No children allowed in the maternity ward or in this advertisement we exchange anything – bicycles, washing machines, etc. Why not bring your wife along and get a wonderful bargain or in this hotel brochure. At least half our customers who fly to this city come by plane. One of my students in grade 2 started his essays on “The poor” like this: I am poor. My father poor. My dog is also poor.

A faux pas is an error, a slip like stepping on a banana peel. We fall accidentally but only to be laughed at. It is a deviation can lead to low grades, lost employment opportunities, lost business, and laughter’s at the way we write. We have to be careful; one world can changed the whole meanings of the sentence: Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar. English is a language that has a lot of eccentric qualities.

One more situation we create disastrous faux pas is when we translate from one language to another. For example Nepalese student, “I am going to give an examination” looks perfectly alright but in English, students cannot give the examination; they can only take it. One of the restaurant in Kathmandu included mutton head boil in its menu and my native English speaking colleague had no idea what it was. When it was explained, we had a hilarious laughter. Most Nepalese restaurants list lemon in the menu and serve lime.

There have been disasters even with the big companies when they mistranslated their slogans. Parker pen’s English slogan “Avoid Embarrassment” was translated into Spanish only to mean “Avoid pregnancy” in china, the translated of the Pepsi slogan “come alive with the Pepsi generation” came out as “Pepsi brings back your dead ancestors.” In a Nigerian Nation Theatre, the doorway sign read: in entrance and out entrance.

DEVELOPING Speaking skill

EDUCATION

DEVELOPING Speaking skill

Setting the Scene

The primary function of language Is communication, and speech is the most the important manifestation of most language. We refer to people who use specific language as ‘Speaker’ of that language. Speak is the primary productive language skill. Unfortunately it is challenging for anyone to master a foreign language-it is challenging for Nepali to master the English language. Classroom activities that developing the learners abilities to express the ideas through speech is an important part of language course. When we consider Nepali students, we found they lack minimum speaking abilities even though they might score high marks in national examination which are writing heavy. Consequently, these students(especially students in Nepali medium schools) find it extremely difficult to find employment in the job market-because of their incapability to communicate well in this foreign language. Effective speaking activities are a most in every English language classroom.

Problems with speaking

Inhibition: learners are often inhibition when trying to speak in foreign language in the classroom. They are worried about making mistakes, fearful of criticism or being laughed at, or they are simply shy (Ur 2005:121).

Silent culture: learners are often treated as passive recipients so they think they needed not speak. They cannot think of anything to say. They have no motive to express themselves. If a students responds to the teacher the other students relax for the moment, and they do not voluntarily initiate speaking. This problem is compounded by the tendency of some learners to dominate, while other speak very little or not at all.

TTT vs STT: Most classroom are dominated by the teacher. In a large classroom, student have very little time to speak or not at all. It is necessary to find a balance between teacher taking time(TTT) and students talking time(STT). If the students lack opportunity to practice, they will not be able to speak when it is required.

L1 interference: The learners of foreign language have their own mother tongue(L1). The learners tend to use L1 because it is easier, and they find using the foreign language unnatural when speaking in group or they think they can’t express themselves fully in the foreign language. Similarly L1 interference is observed in pronunciation, selection of words, grammar and formality as well. Moreover, due to the use of the grammar translation method by teacher, students are puzzled by the complexity of translating rules into conversation.

Nature or speaking activities: I regret to say that our classrooms do not focus on speaking activities, and even when these activities occur, they are not carried out satisfactorily. I want to ask some questions to English teaching teachers. Can you think of any speaking activity you practice in the classroom? How much time to speaking in classroom? Do all students contribute to discussions or are discussions dominated by a minority of talkative students? Are the topics provide the students for discussion interesting? The teacher should consider these question while designing activities.
<img width='1' height='1'
